250th First Flag Raising Celebration

  • Prospect Hill Park Munroe Street Somerville, MA 02143 (map)

On, January 1, 1776, George Washington ordered the raising of the "Grand Union Flag" over Prospect Hill. The First Flag symbolized both the defiance and resolve of the Continental Army as they entered a critical phase of the Siege of Boston. This year's milstone 250th anniversary expands the traditional military ceremony to better reflect the full diversity of people whose labor, courage and aspirations shaped the Revolution. This year’s program includes participation by militia from Charlestown, Bedford, Rhode Island and more, special guest, Richard Johnson, appearances by George Washington on horseback, "Primus Hall", historic music and singalongs, reading of Phyllis Wheatley’s famous poem to George Washington in the months leading up to January 1st, 1776 and a communal flag following the Grand Union, this year’s First Flag. Children will be able to create their own flags and all who feel safe to do so are invited to bring national flags representing Somerville’s communities. This 250th anniversary is an important moment in our history — past, present and future. Hot drinks and pastries will be available.

Program is free, but please register at Eventbrite.
